The “hire a CA for ITR filing” question gets one of three answers depending on your situation, and the wrong answer either overspends or underprotects. This page walks through the decision frame, indicative costs, the eight questions to ask before hiring, and where BatchWise fits (and where it doesn’t).

The honest first answer

For most salaried individuals with simple income, you don’t need to hire a CA. The Income Tax e-Filing portal is free, DIY platforms (Quicko / Tax2Win DIY / ClearTax DIY) are ₹0-₹2,000/year, and ITR-1 / ITR-2 filings take 20-60 minutes if your data is already in Form 26AS, AIS, and TIS (which it is).

You need to hire a CA — or at minimum a CA-assisted platform — when one or more of these apply:

  1. Multiple income heads collide (salary + business + capital gains + foreign income together)
  2. Tax-audit threshold crossed under Section 44AB (business turnover > [Fact: section_44ab_threshold_business_high_cash] with >5% cash, or > [Fact: section_44ab_threshold_business_low_cash] with ≤5% cash; professional gross receipts > [Fact: section_44ab_threshold_professional_default] — or > [Fact: section_44ab_threshold_professional_digital] where ≥95% receipts are digital, per Section 44ADA alignment)
  3. NRI status with foreign income, DTAA application, or Schedule FA
  4. Capital gains complexity — unlisted shares, real estate, multiple brokers without API integration, RSU/ESOP vesting
  5. Notice or scrutiny — Section 143(1) intimation, defective-return notice, scrutiny intimation
  6. Statutory audit obligations for Pvt Ltd / LLP — separate from ITR but a CA does both
  7. Pre-fundraising preparation — investor due diligence requires audited financials and clean ITR positioning

Outside these triggers, paying ₹15,000-₹50,000/year for a CA when DIY costs ₹0-₹2,000 is overspend.

Indicative costs for 2026

CA-assisted ITR (platform)₹999-₹5,000 per filingTaxBuddy / Tax2Win / ClearTax CA-Assisted / IndiaFilings ITR-Plus
Local CA — individual ITR only₹3,000-₹15,000/yearDirect local CA engagement
Local CA — SME full retainer (ITR + GST + TDS + ROC + bookkeeping)₹15,000-₹75,000/yearLocal CA firm
Local CA — Mid-size SME retainer₹75,000-₹3 lakh/yearLocal CA firm with team
Tax-audit fees (Form 3CA/3CB + 3CD signed)₹15,000-₹75,000ICAI-registered CA in practice — required

Always verify current pricing with the provider — quotes vary by season, scope, and complexity.

Important: CA-assisted-platform pricing (TaxBuddy / Tax2Win / ClearTax CA-Assisted / IndiaFilings ITR-Plus) typically covers ITR filing only. Section 44AB tax-audit certification (Form 3CA / 3CB + 3CD signing) is a separate engagement that platforms do not include in their base ITR plans — for tax-audit cases you’ll need a direct CA engagement or a platform’s enterprise/audit add-on tier at additional cost.

CA-assisted platform vs local CA firm — three differences

Personalisation. Local CA = year-round relationship + tax-planning advice + notice/scrutiny representation. Platform = filing transaction, sometimes light advisory.

Cost. Platform = ₹999-₹5,000 per filing. Local CA = ₹15,000-₹75,000/year retainer for SME scope.

Scope. Platform = ITR + sometimes GST + TDS automation. Local CA = everything (audit, ROC, advisory, transfer pricing, complex scopes).

Default rule: Salaried individual + small business with routine compliance → platform. Established SME with multi-year compliance + advisory needs → local CA. Founder mid-fundraising or facing scrutiny → local CA, no question.

Eight questions to ask before hiring

Surface scope-fit and trust signals in the first call:

  1. ICAI membership number and Certificate of Practice (CoP) status? — confirms they’re an ICAI member in good standing.
  2. Direct experience with my business type? (SaaS / D2C / manufacturing / professional services) — sector experience matters.
  3. Fee structure — fixed-price per return, hourly, or annual retainer? — get clarity upfront.
  4. Notice and scrutiny — included in the annual fee or charged separately? — major cost-surprise area.
  5. Tax-audit signing capacity (CoP + audit certification)? — relevant if turnover may cross Section 44AB.
  6. What software do you use — Tally / Zoho Books / ClearTax / your own? — affects integration.
  7. 2-3 client references at similar revenue scale? — verify track record.
  8. Peak-season (July-October) turnaround time? — varies massively across firms.

Local CA vs remote — when does city matter?

For routine ITR + GST filings, remote works fine. The ICAI-registered CA can sign and file from anywhere; tax law requires no local presence.

For complex situations — notice response, scrutiny, search-and-seizure, GST audit at premises, ROC filings requiring DSC pickup — having a city-based CA (or city-present partner firm) helps.

Cost trade-off: Tier-1 city CAs typically charge ₹10,000-₹25,000 more than smaller-city CAs for the same scope. Many growing SMEs use a hybrid: smaller-city CA for routine compliance + Tier-1 specialist for the rare complex situation.

Where BatchWise fits

BatchWise is not a CA firm. It’s a coordination platform that pairs you with an ICAI-registered partner CA firm for specific narrow scopes:

Partner CA firms sign and take professional responsibility under their own CoP and DSC.

BatchWise is NOT the right answer for: litigation, transfer pricing, M&A, statutory audit (general), complex scrutiny defence, FSSAI / trademark / company incorporation. For these, go directly to a local CA firm or one of the larger marketplaces (IndiaFilings, Vakilsearch).

See the DIY vs hire CA guide for the broader decision frame across DIY / Assisted / Full-Service tiers.
